French Trysts Secrets of a Courtesan Kirsten Lobe 9780312363208 Books

I adore the author, Kirsten Lobe and read both her other two books, "Paris Hangover" and "Paris, Baby" and loved them. I think she is hysterical and I adore her sense of humor. When I began this one, yeah there were definitely some laughs, but I just can't finish reading it, it is just too trashy. I'd rather fill my mind with funny Paris adventures that are not downright immoral.

Well, I decided to finish this book hoping/wishing for some more great Lobe humor, only to find more trash, trash, and trash. Even the ending, the way it ended so stupidly,as if this character would/could just forget everything she had done and run off with her boyfriend again is simply ludicrous. Hello? We are a product of our experiences! And I think the ending of this book is awful~! I think the character of this book immoral, and the story well, you decide readers.

French Trysts Secrets of a Courtesan Kirsten Lobe 9780312363208 Books Reviews

I had read Kirsten Lobe's first book "Paris Hangover" and I adored it. So when I saw that she had come out with a second book, I immediately bought it. Sadly, I was quite disappointed. After awhile Alexandra got on my nerves. I hated how she endlessly brought up how she lived in Illinois and that it was just Hicksville USA. Now Illinois is no France but it's not like Illinois doesn't have culture or class. But how she kept bringing it up definitely made her seem like a desperate wannabe. Alexandra's attempt at humor got to be annoying as well. I assume that the reader is supposed to think that Alexandra is so very witty and funny but I didn't laugh at all.

My other biggest complaint is the constant use of words in italics. Pretty much every page has a least one or more words in italics. Kirsten Lobe either uses them for emphasis or the French words that the characters used. This book truly must hold the record for the most words in italics. I don't quite understand why when the French characters were speaking, Kirsten Lobe put words in both French and English. My understanding is that the French would be speaking in French so why the mixing of French and English? To me it would seem she wouldn't need to do that because then it just seems like the character is mixing French and English and I don't really think that actual French people would be doing that just because the main character is English.

The storyline just wasn't that great either. It was pretty predictable. I would have been more pleased if Kirsten Lobe had decided to differ from the predictable writing path and would have surprised the reader with something unexpected. There are a lot of sex scenes in the novel and while I wasn't appalled by it, I could have done without some of the scenes.

So I was greatly disappointed by "French Trysts". The only thing I really liked about it was that it was set in Paris, which I love. I will continue to read Kirsten Lobe's novels in the future. I just hope that the next one will be more like "Paris Hangover" and not like "French Trysts".
"French Trysts" is pure trash, but I loved every paragraph! This is the story of Alexandra Ward, a young American graduate student who is studying in Paris. When her fiancé walks out on her, Alexandra attempts to blot out her feelings of depression by engaging in what at first appears to be a harmless flirtation with an extremely wealthy businessman. However, Jean-Albert (a.k.a. "The Zillionaire") has other things in mind, and Alexandra soon becomes his courtesan (which is another term for high-class mistress). Soon Alexandra finds herself immersed in a world where the finest things in life are at her disposal, and she hones her skills as a courtesan who caters to the richest and most powerful men in France. Abandoning her studies and her crappy old apartment, Alexandra is dazzled by diamonds, couture clothes, and credit cards with unlimited balances, all of which are provided by her various lovers with virtually no strings attached. Jean-Albert even presents Alexandra with the deed to million-dollar apartment. Although Alexandra enjoys every bit of her glamorous new surroundings, she eventually questions whether the life of a courtesan is worth the price of sacrificing true love.

I wasn't sure if I'd like this book at first. The narration can be annoying at times, especially because the author chooses to punctuate every fourth or fifth sentence with an exclamation point! Seriously, there are probably a million exclamation points in this book! It gets really freaking annoying after a while! (See what I mean?) However, I really warmed up to Alexandra, and what I once considered an annoying narrative eventually became rather charming. My only other major complaint is that I was able to predict the ending of the book from the very first chapter, but oh well. I still enjoyed the book tremendously.

One thing I must mention This book contains a lot of graphic sexual descriptions...a LOT! If there is a single prude bone in your body, then don't even think about reading "French Trysts"...trust me, you'll regret it! However, for those of you who can handle all the sex talk and are looking for a refreshing new spin on the chick lit genre, this book is definitely for you.
I wanted to love this book - but I never liked the main character - so it was hard to like a whole book about her - I also hated how the author would just start writing in French without letting us non French readers (speakers) know what the chacters were saying - I don't recommend this book at all
I totally enjoyed Mlle. Lobe's debut novel as a guilty pleasure - as delicious as a macaroon from Laduree. Her sophmore effort is a bit forced. The insertions of french words and phrases throughout get annoying - like listening to someone who doesn't quite speak french but mixes English with French phrases instead. Still, a pleasant way to pass a hot summer afternoon or a long transatlantic flight.

Fingers crossed for novel #3.
An excellent read...I wish the author would release some more books.
