With Frederick the Great A Story of the Seven Years' War G A George Alfred Henty Books

This is the only Henty book which I have so far read. It is an amazingly detailed history of the battles fought on the ground in Germany during the Seven Years War. That war is like an elephant being touched and described by several blind people; each one has a drastically different version of what the elephant is. (I'm sure you've heard it.) In the case of the Seven Years War, its chiefly thought of as a naval war in which Britain triumphed over France. Americans call it the French and Indian War in which George Washington acquired his military command experience. But I learned about this war in my first year at UCLA, during which I had a wonderful professor by the name of Andrew Lossky. Lossky's view of the war was very simple. France and Austria had been enemies, fighting each other almost continuously for more than a century over contested lands in Italy, Germany and the Netherlands. In 1756 they created a "Diplomatic Revolutin" whereby they became allies instead of enemies. The result of this was, according to professor Lossky, that England and the whole of the rest of Europe went to war against what they saw as this unholy alliance. I have a great affection for Andrew Lossky; but I do believe that this book by George Henty tells a truer story than my professor did. Lossky said that it was no contest, that France and Austria won the war against the rest of Europe hands down. His account was clearly not correct. France lost her colonies, including Canada and India, to Britain. That is not a win. And France was badly beaten repeatedly by Prussian and English armies in Germany. The most important pages is this book are the last several which describe the end of the war which was triggered by the death of the empress Elizabeth of Russia because her son, the new Czar, was an avid admirer of Frederick and all things Prussian. So Russia went instantly from enemy to ally and that is what saved Frederick and his kingdom from defeat and possible partition. I'm sorry if I got into the weeds a bit, but this book is AMAZINGLY detailed in its history of the battlefield engagements. I have never seen this information anywhere else! Only in a volume of German history of the eighteenth century would you find these battles. It does sometimes get dry and boring. But most of it is fascinating! The escapes from prison are brilliantly written and very exciting. If I had to choose between three and five stars, I would not hesitate to give it five. If I could just whittle it down, take out a hundred pages of too much detail, then I'd raise it to five stars. I was entertained and I learned a great deal about a fascinating subject, so I'm very happy that I read this book.

With Frederick the Great A Story of the Seven Years' War G A George Alfred Henty Books Reviews

entertaining read
enjoyed it very much, have become a history buff/nut in my old age. It gave me an historical time with actual human intervention
Good resumé for young people
This book is little more than a summary of Prussia's role in the Seven Years' War with a few stock characters thrown in for seasoning. It's still quite readable, but it's not Henty's best.
Difficult to get through but a necessary read for military thought. Even if you are not a big fan of Frederick everyone interested in military thought should read this.
Great writing author did a good job mixing history into the story without making it boring . I would highly recommend this to anybody .
I suppose one either loves Henty, or hates him, but as one of the former, this was a good read! The thing I enjoy most about Henty is his ability to give detailed summaries of the events he takes in hand. As an American, the "Seven Years War" was taught to me as the "French and Indian War" and little was said about the European conflict that actually precipitated that of North American conflict. The hero is of course a bit on the super human side of things, but that is how Henty wrote, and since it keeps the history in first-person for almost the entirety of the book, allowances can be made for the improbability of the fiction portion of the book. Having read a non-fiction book on this war, I would highly recommend this book for those who want to learn more without committing to a very lengthy read.
